These vaults, thought to be the entrance porch to the great hall, are the last standing remains of Bristol Castle, originally built in the 12th century. The majority of the building was demolished after the English Civil War in the 17th century, but some parts were re-used within later buildings. By the 20th century, the chambers formed part of a shop that fronted Castle Street. The building is currently unused.
